Types of Pain - Low Back Pain

Just about everyone has suffered from low back pain at some time. Our head and torso are attached to our pelvis and legs in such a way as to make for easy movements and to allow contortions when certain physical activities are required. However the muscles in this area can become strained as a result of poor posture, lifting heavy weights or from sitting in a chair or couch that is not proper for our body type. Pain in this area can also be caused by undiagnosed medical problems.

Where The Pain Comes From

Pain in the lower back may be caused by strained muscles but also from the exertion put on tissue in this area if uncomfortable positions are maintained. The very shape of our pelvis and upper abdomen often means that organs, bone, muscle and tendons are often in close proximity. The pelvis also has to deal with the forces felt in the legs as well as the downward force created by the weight of the upper body.

Factors In Causing Low Back Pain

Sleeping on the wrong type of mattress is a leading cause of discomfort in this area. A mattress should not sag and should be able to support the weight of the individual without folding slightly. Also sleeping on one's back for the entire night is not advisable; sleeping on the side with knees slightly bent is better for the lower back.

Standing for long periods of time is often necessary in the workplace but this puts a strain on the back. Resting one foot on a low stool helps to relieve the pressure put on these muscles and can actually prevent slouching.

New furniture often looks nice in the living room but getting used to the shape of the couch or chairs can lead to back pain. If these items can be adjusted it is advisable to find the most comfortable setting and leave the furniture in this position.

Long car trips are a major cause of low back pain. The body is not used to being in a bucket seat for hours at a time. Taking a break out of the car every 90 minutes is highly recommended.

Back Pain Treatment

Muscle relaxing medications or analgesics for pain are often the only treatment needed.
